EXPLORE THASSOS

Thassos is one of Greece’s most naturally beautiful islands — a place where pine-covered mountains tumble towards turquoise water, traditional stone villages remain wonderfully authentic, and some of the most striking beaches in the northern Aegean are scattered around an easy-to-explore coastline. Unlike the more cosmopolitan Cycladic islands, Thassos has a relaxed, understated character. It is ideal for travellers looking for beautiful beaches, nature, authentic Greek food and villages, while still enjoying the privacy and comfort of a villa holiday. Located in the northern Aegean, opposite the coast of eastern Macedonia, Thassos combines mountainous landscapes and dense vegetation with a coastline known for remarkably clear water. The island has also been inhabited since prehistoric times and has a particularly rich archaeological heritage.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THASSOS

Golden Beach

One of the island’s signature beaches, Golden Beach is a long sweep of fine golden sand framed by mountains and vegetation. The water is generally shallow, making it especially attractive for families, while the area also offers water sports, diving and plenty of places for food and drinks.

Marble Beach – Saliara

Perhaps the most photographed beach on Thassos. Instead of ordinary sand, the shore is covered with tiny white marble pebbles. Against the intensely clear sea, they create extraordinary shades of turquoise and electric blue. It is beautiful, unusual and absolutely worth seeing — although its popularity means an early visit is preferable during peak summer.

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach has fine sand, beautiful water and a lush backdrop. It is also known for having more noticeable waves than many Aegean beaches, giving it a slightly wilder character.

Aliki

Aliki offers something more than a beautiful swim. The small peninsula has beaches on both sides, clear green-blue water and archaeological remains nearby. Ancient marble quarrying played an important role here, and traces of the island’s history are still visible around the peninsula

GIOLA – THE NATURAL LAGOON

Giola is one of the island’s most recognisable natural landmarks: a sea-fed natural rock pool carved into the coast.

The experience is very different from a conventional beach. You arrive via a walk over rocky terrain, and there is little natural shade immediately around the lagoon, so good footwear, water and sun protection are useful.

It is especially beautiful earlier in the day, before the busiest period.

Giola is frequently included among the signature experiences of Thassos and is accessible by road followed by a short hike, or from the sea.

LIMENAS – THASSOS TOWN

Limenas is the island’s capital and principal port.

It is worth visiting not simply for shopping and dinner but because ancient Thassos sits alongside the modern town.

The Archaeological Museum of Thasos traces the island’s development from prehistoric through Early Christian times and stands beside the Ancient Agora. The museum’s official information also makes it a useful starting point for understanding just how significant Thassos was in antiquity.

For dinner in Limenas, Mylos Restaurant is a well-reviewed option for Greek cuisine, while TAVERNAKI Thassos is another popular choice.

FOOD & LOCAL FLAVOURS

Thassos is an excellent destination for uncomplicated Greek food: grilled fish, meats, vegetables, local cheeses, olives, honey and dishes built around seasonal ingredients.

The island is particularly associated with olives and honey, so both make good local products to seek out.

For a seaside meal around Skala Marion, Taverna Armeno is a highly rated option. Around Kinira, Taverna Faros is another popular Greek restaurant.

For a more relaxed beach-day atmosphere, Endless Blue Beach Bar Thassos sits at Golden Beach, while Natura Beach Bar is another well-rated choice on the island.

THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGES

Panagia

A beautiful traditional village near Golden Beach, with stone houses, narrow streets and running water from mountain springs. It works particularly well as a stop before or after the beach.

Theologos

One of the island’s most atmospheric mountain villages and a good choice for experiencing traditional architecture and local food away from the resort areas.

Kazaviti

For travellers who enjoy slower, less commercial places, Kazaviti offers stone houses, greenery and shaded village squares — exactly the sort of setting in which lunch can unexpectedly become an entire afternoon.

THASSOS FROM THE SEA

A private boat day is one of the experiences I would strongly recommend.

The island’s coastline is filled with coves, rocky formations and swimming spots that feel completely different when approached from the water.

For YAMAS guests, this is also an experience worth upgrading: rather than joining a large excursion boat, arrange a private motorboat or sailing boat with a skipper and build the day around swimming, secluded bays and a relaxed seaside lunch.

NATURE & ACTIVE THASSOS

Thassos is not only a beach destination.

Its mountainous interior makes it suitable for hiking and exploring, and Mount Ipsarion is the island’s dominant peak. For active travellers, combining mountain scenery with swimming later in the day is one of the pleasures of staying here.

The island’s forests, hiking opportunities, villages, beaches and boat trips are part of what gives Thassos its unusually varied character.
